Small Steps in the Right Nutritional Direction
Kids are a handful. It is never a dull moment with them. They enrich us in so many ways, but they can also drain us physically and emotionally. Life itself is hectic, and between work, family and other commitments, it can be hard to get your body the fuel it really needs to stay strong and healthy.
To keep up with our kids and our busy lifestyles, we need to take care of ourselves and be sure we’re passing on nutrition habits that maintain our good health.
Good nutrition is critical for the entire family.
Good nutrition does not need to be complicated, extra work or taste bad. It’s all about taking small steps in the right direction.
For example, let’s consider the right amount of fiber in your diet to keep you energized. Fiber is amazing. It supports a healthy digestive system, controls blood sugar levels and has many other benefits.
Fiber is a nutrient most people do not get enough of from their normal day to day meal plan.
Many natural foods and many food products can be a rich source of fiber, but we need to know which ones to select.
Whole grains, fruits, vegetables and other intact whole foods, are a great place to start. But when dealing with children it helps to have a few other choices to boost the daily fiber intake.
Nutrition First products are just one example of fiber enriched products that also taste great and fit into active lifestyles. Bakery goods such as these designed to provide a good source of fiber, in a familiar format and without too much added sugar or fat is a simple way to get a bit of extra fiber into the whole family.
There are other fiber rich products that you can choose from to close the gap between the fiber content your family gets and what they really need. Another simple source of fiber is a product like Metamucil’s “Clear and Natural”. It contains a soluble fiber that can easily be added to your family’s favorite beverages, such as juices, or soups, and while you’ll know it in there, they won’t notice the healthful change. And just like that making fiber-full choices in a baked good or your favorite beverage, you have taken a small but important step in the right direction for your family’s health.

But while kids may know more, they may not know better. It’s up to parents to step in and make a difference in our children’s long term wellness. What better place is there to teach our children about health and nutrition, as well as smart food choices, than in our own kitchen?
When you stop and think about it, there some pretty motivating reasons to involve our kids in the kitchen and meal preparation.
First, there is the quality time you’ll spend together. If you’re crunched for time, this is a great way to share an activity that’s educational while building family bonds. Cooking together is a hands-on way to share quality time with our children and build memories that will last a life time. What greater sense of Read more…
